Patrick Kane Breaks NHL Record: Most Points by an American-Born Player | Red Wings History (2026)

Patrick Kane Shatters NHL Record, Becoming the All-Time Leading American-Born Scorer! For many, Patrick Kane was already the undisputed king of American hockey players in the NHL. Now, the record books officially agree.

In a pivotal moment during the Detroit Red Wings' clash against the Washington Capitals, Kane notched his 1,375th career point with an assist on a Ben Chiarot goal. This incredible achievement propels him past Mike Modano, cementing his status as the most prolific American-born player in NHL history.

This milestone caps off a year already brimming with individual triumphs for Kane. Earlier this month, he joined the elite club of NHL players to reach 500 career goals, a feat only achieved by 50 players in the league's storied past, and making him the fifth American-born player to do so. But for Kane, this scoring record holds a special significance.

He fondly recalled his humble beginnings: “I was just a young kid from Buffalo who tried to maybe play hockey and enjoy it, and maybe get a college scholarship or something like that,” he shared in November. “You never think — like I remember at my age group, comparing myself to some of the kids in my age, and I just felt like they were so much better than me, right? And as time goes on, whether it’s getting opportunities or take advantage of playing in different situations … you get chances to do pretty special things.” He added, “So, (I’ve) been pretty fortunate with that, but to be up there on that list would be pretty cool, just given the amount of players that have played the game from the U.S.”

But here's where it gets interesting: While Kane now reigns supreme among Americans, he's also inching closer to another legendary mark. Hockey Hall of Famer Brett Hull, who represented Team USA internationally, amassed 1,391 career points. With 27 games remaining in the current season, Kane is just 17 points shy of surpassing Hull's total as well.

Kane spoke about his admiration for Modano: “Modano was a guy I loved to watch. Just the jersey flapping and (the) speed he had, the swag he played with was fun for a young, offensive player to watch.” Modano, who concluded his illustrious career with the Red Wings in 2011, was present at a Red Wings vs. Minnesota Wild game when Kane was just two points away from tying the record. Modano, a native of Livonia, Michigan, has expressed his intention to be in Detroit for Kane's official honor ceremony.

The record-breaking assist came from a skillful play where Kane set up Alex DeBrincat, who then fed Chiarot for a powerful shot. There was a brief moment of anticipation earlier in the game when it seemed Kane had already set the record, but a disallowed goal due to an offside call meant the history-making moment was delayed.

And this is the part most people miss: Kane's remarkable comeback is even more inspiring considering he underwent hip resurfacing surgery in 2023. At the time, there was considerable uncertainty about his ability to return to the ice, let alone play at a high level. Yet, he has not only recovered but has been incredibly productive, amassing 138 points in 162 games since joining the Red Wings.

Drafted as the No. 1 overall pick in 2007, Kane spent the majority of his career, 16 seasons, with the Chicago Blackhawks. During his tenure there, he secured three Stanley Cup championships (2010, 2013, 2015) and earned the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP in 2013. He also received the Hart Trophy as the league's MVP in 2016, solidifying his reputation as one of his era's premier playmakers.

Kane has proudly represented the United States on the international stage, participating in the Olympics in 2010 and 2014, and earning a silver medal in 2010. His teammate Alex DeBrincat fittingly called him, “An American icon. He’s the best to ever do it.”

Throughout his impressive 19-year NHL career, Kane has exclusively played for storied Original Six franchises located in the United States: the Blackhawks (2007-2023), a brief stint with the New York Rangers (2022-2023), and now the Red Wings (since 2023).
