From 2000 to 2020, the county near Lake Michigan witnessed a remarkable 15,506 increase in its 25-34-year-old population, reaching 101,273. This surge surpasses the state's overall decrease of 57,510 residents in this age group. Kent County's 18.1% growth in young adults over two decades is the state's second-highest, behind only Marquette County's 18.6% increase. Kent County Administrator Al Vanderberg attributes this success to a thriving community, diverse economy, robust healthcare sector, and a burgeoning technology industry, all of which attract talent and create opportunities. The county's appeal extends beyond its borders, as it's home to Michigan's second-largest city, Grand Rapids, which has seen significant investment and construction to enhance its offerings for residents. This includes the development of an 8,500-seat soccer stadium, a 12,000-seat amphitheater, and the revitalization of the Grand River corridor. The city's cultural scene, vibrant nightlife, and proximity to Lake Michigan make it an attractive destination for young professionals. Grand Rapids, in particular, has seen a 7,151-resident increase in the 25-34 age group, accounting for half of Kent County's young adult population growth. The county's ability to offer a blend of urban life and natural amenities, coupled with its strong job market and economic resilience, positions it as a desirable location for young adults, challenging the state's overall trend.
